1960 AFL Championship

The American Football League was still considered the “lesser” of the two American football leagues during the early 1960s. It wouldn't be until 1967 that Lamar Hunt coined the term “Super Bowl,” to match the AFL and the NFL for football supremacy. In 1960, the Houston Oilers defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 24-16 for the AFL Championship. The game was played on January 1, 1961, in Houston's Jeppesen Stadium.

1960 NFL Championship

The 1960 NFL Championship offered a better known sports score of 1960, matching two storied franchises: The Green Bay Packers vs. The Philadelphia Eagles. The 10-2 Eagles defeated the 8-4 Packers, 17-13 in a game that was bumped from Sunday, the 25th, to Monday, the 26th--the NFL didn't want to play on Christmas Day.

1960 World Series

The 1960 World Series is still considered one of the greatest 7-game series in the history of the game of baseball. The underdog Pittsburgh Pirates took down the hard-hitting, heavy favorite New York Yankees in game 7, on the famous walk-off home-run rocketed to left-center by Bill Mazeroski. The dinger broke the 9-9 tie, and scored an unlikely World Series Championship for the National League.

1960 NBA Championship

The 1960 NBA Finals are a reminder of how so many things have changed in the NBA, and how so many things have remained the same. In an epic 7 game series, the Boston Celtics defeated the St. Louis Hawks, 4 games to 3, and served as the second consecutive championship of the incomparable Boston dynasty. Game 7 was played on April 9, 1960, with a final score of 122-103.

1960 Stanley Cup

Much like the NBA, the NHL was being dominated by a single team: The Montreal Canadiens. The 1960 Stanley Cup Finals consisted of a less-than-entertaining four game sweep. The Montreal Canadiens vs. The Toronto Maple Leafs—a rematch of the Stanley Cup Finals from the previous year. The Maple Leafs never threatened to take a contest--the closest attempt came in a 2-1 losing effort in game 2. For the Montreal Canadiens, the 1960 Stanley Cup Championship marked their 5th consecutive championship victory. To this day, no NHL team has equaled such a feat.
